Garbage clean up and septic tanks

Filed under: Uncategorized — aroundthebend @ 7:40 am

We got in a bin and cleaned up the garbage pile (before and after above).  It is amazing how much plastic wrapping and scraps you accumulate in a building project.  We probably could have paid more attention to some of that.  But we sent it away to a place which recycles construction materials so hopefully it will find its future uses.

We also got the septic tanks delivered.  Hopefully installed in the next week or so.  Somewhat related to garbage, eh?

bathtub and soffits

Filed under: Uncategorized — aroundthebend @ 9:52 am

Dennis spent his last week with us getting the bathtub installed and beginning the tub surround, as well as planning out how the soffits will be installed.  Both feel like aspects of finishing, though there is lots to do yet.  We are particularly pleased with how the soffits look.

Attic insulation

Filed under: Uncategorized — aroundthebend @ 8:06 pm

We blew 180 bags of cellulose (shredded and treated recyled paper) into the attic.  Marianne and Dennis filled the hopper of the blower and Harry crawled around in the attic with the hose installing the insulation.  As you can see that was a dirty job …. but …. someone has to do it.  The end result is 15+ inches of insulation giving us R50 in the attic to go with our R35+ straw walls, and a whole lot of aching muscles.

Appreciated help

Filed under: Uncategorized — aroundthebend @ 7:58 pm

We’ve enjoyed the help of several people recently.  Sue and Jo helped with stuffing straw between the bales, but more importantly with valuable tips and advice that they learned from working on Sue’s beautiful post and beam strawbale house in Quebec last year.  Will and Maria also did some straw stuffing.  It was good to connect with them after we attended their wedding just a month ago.

The frog hasn’t really been helping much but hangs around in the bits of straw around the yard. Actually he helps in invisible ways — by eating insects and adding beauty to this rural landscape.

Dennis also finished drywalling most of the ceiling in preparation for the installation of the attic insulation.

rough in plumbing is passed

Filed under: Uncategorized — aroundthebend @ 7:46 pm

Dennis finished off the vent pipes for the plumbing and filled the whole system with water to check for leaks… he seems happy with the results.  Then he did the supply piping out of pex, some of the leftover pex from the radiant floor system and other.  We set it up as a “homerun” system with a direct pipe from the manifolds in the utility room to each sink or toilet.  There is a separate manifold in the kitchen for the different needs there.
